• Retirement? In 2005, Peter asked about the Tobian word for retirement.
  
  Justin Andrew: Pete, there is no such word. People work all their lives and retire when they are frail and too weak to move around. Sounds like a very hard and labor intense life but it is not. Can we invent one?? or how about a phrase that tells the idea about "retire." For me it would be "ba isa mouri tuhufai, ebe iramo ye yai fiteh ba irou yasemei yamo". —literally means, "I'm old and I should stop working so I could rest."

Anyone out there with any suggestions?? Since almost all Tobians work for wages these days, we should include the word "retire" in our vocabulary.

• Huan Hosei: RETIRE—to me there is no concise meaning of the word. The word "retire" and its meaning is foreign to Pacific Islanders. Additionally, its concept and practices are attributes of cargo culture. Here's a few definitions that came to mind:

  1. emoripou bongur ma masirapar yai kauh har wetsir sukur  [I am a retired teacher]
  2. emiripou bongur ma masirapar yai fiteh  [ service retirement - have met required number of years of work, therefore I am no longer working]
  3. emoripou bongur ma masirapar yai fitehingeri koferment [ I am retired-service retirement with the government
