Doitch is a way of writing the Tobian word for German. In English and German this word is spelled Deutsche.  German times began in 1901 and ended with the German surrender of Palau to Japan in 1914. The Germans had been the first to make the Southwest Islands (including Tobi) part of Palau, which they put together into one political unit with all the places that were to become the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
